If you’ve been looking into buying a dehumidifier to keep mould and condensation at bay in your house then you’ve probably come across the Ebac brand.
Ebac is a family owned British appliance company who also make fridges and freezers etc. We are big fans (no pun intended) of Ebac dehumidifiers and we have covered the smaller Ebac dehumidifier models 2650 and 2850 previously on Byemould.
Since the 3850e is Ebac’s most powerful dehumidifier we are keen to see which features this Ebac dehumidifier contains.
But first let’s look at the Ebac 3850e dehumidifier’s running costs.
Running Costs
Other dehumidifier review websites mention that the operating wattage for the Ebac 3850e is 180 watts. They do this because that’s the figure listed in the Amazon description.
However 180 watts seems to be a very low figure for a full size dehumidifier with a laundry mode feature so we contacted Ebac themselves. Ebac customer service representative Michelle Gutteridge kindly provided us with the following information;
“When the machine starts up and the compressor is firing up it will reach 320 watts but when you run the machine in the Smart control it runs at approximately 200 watts. If you increase the fan speed it will increase the watts by about 10 watts. In Laundry mode it will be approximately 280 watts “
Based on these figures and an electricity tariff of 15p p/kWh (check your latest electricity bill for your own rate) we can deduct that at 200 watts the Ebac 3850e dehumidifier will cost around 3 pence per hour to run and at 280 watts (ie laundry mode) the 3850e will cost around 4.2p per hour to run.
Smart Control Energy Saving Technology
As mentioned above the Ebac 3850e comes equipped with Smart Energy Saving Technology which allows the dehumidifier to select the most appropriate setting for mould and damp elimination automatically.
The beauty of this type of technology is that you can just leave the dehumidifier running 24/7 while saving on energy consumption.
Once the humidity level has reached your target level the Ebac 3850e’s running costs will be significantly lower than dehumidifiers without any energy-saving technology.

Extraction Rate and Water Tank
The stated extraction rate is 21 litres but since the Ebac 3850e dehumidifier is a compressor model actual extraction rates will be lower in the region of around 8 litres per day.
This variance occurs because the extraction test climate (32°C and 100% RH) was higher than UK winter climates hence the actual extraction rate is lower than the stated extraction rate.
Water Tank
The water tank has a 2.5 litre capacity which is perfect for a dehumidifier of this size. The tank is located on the lower front of the dehumidifier.
The Ebac 3850e dehumidifier also contains a standard safety feature called auto shut-off which means that the dehumidifier will turn itself off once the water tank is full. Once the tank has been emptied and reinserted correctly then the dehumidifier will resume operations.
When the tank is full and the dehumidifier stops operations then a LED warning light will alight on the control panel.
Filter
The filter is a carbon filter which provides a cleaner and healthier air than a regular dust filter. Carbon filters can also eliminate smells and odours from the area.
Carbon filters should be replaced every few months but that is no problem as they are easily available on Amazon.
Control Panel
The control panel is situated on top of the dehumidifier for easy access.
Featuring soft touch buttons the control panel is easy to use even if you’ve never used a dehumidifier before.
As you can see from the diagram on the right you can use the control panel to control features such as laundry mode for drying clothes indoors, the timer, fans speeds and the Smart Energy Efficient technology.
The LED display is fairly large and is great for the elderly and those with vision impairment.

8 Hour Timer
The Ebac 3850e dehumidifier features a 8 hour timer which is an ideal companion to the laundry mode or if you want to leave the unit running to get condensation of the windows while you go to work..
The timer settings are 2, 4 or 8 hours.
Air Purification Mode
You can also turn on the air purification mode on the control panel and this will provide a cleaner air by getting rid of spores, dust, allergens, odours and pollen from the air.
If you suffer from airborne allergies or participate in relaxation activities such as reiki, meditation or yoga then you will find this feature very handy.
Operating Volume and Dimensions
The Ebac 3850e dehumidifier is a compressor type dehumidifier. Compressor dehumidifiers are typically a little louder and heavier than desiccant dehumidifiers.
Having said that the 3850e operates at around 46 d(B)a which is standard for compressor dehumidifiers of this size.
There is also a quiet mode available in case you want to use this dehumidifier in the bedroom when sleeping.

Auto Defrost
When compressor dehumidifiers operate in colder temperatures (below approx 10°C) the coils get cold and find it hard to extract moisture from the air. When this occurs auto defrost automatically turns the dehumidifier off so that the coils can warm up. Once the coils are warmed up and efficient the dehumidifier turns itself back on again.
Auto defrost is a standard feature on all compressor dehumidifiers.
Approvals
Testiment to Ebac quality the Ebac 3850e dehumidifier has picked up several approvals from EU standard bodies. These include being CE approved, Electrical approved and EMC approved.
Warranty
All Ebac dehumidifiers come with a 2 year parts and labour warranty.
You can also buy a 5 year plan for £45. See the Ebac 3850e instruction booklet for details.
Read the 3850e instruction booklet carefully so that you know what is covered in case you want to make a claim.
Who Is The Ebac 3850e Dehumidifier For?
The Ebac 3850e is a large dehumidifier and as such is suitable for large houses, apartments and flats.
Ebac suggests that the dehumidifier is suitable for an area measuring 225m² or 450m³. They also say that the unit is suitable if there are 5 or more people living in a house.
Final Thoughts
We really like Ebac dehumidifiers as they are a quality machine and are, of course, a British company!
The features such as the carbon filter, timer and Smart Control energy-saving technology are great.
We’d like to see a few other smaller features such as caster wheels (in fairness you can buy them separately if really needed but it would be handy if they were included) and a continuous drainage facility however we are aware that not everyone is looking for these features.
So if you are happy to empty the water tank yourself and are capable of lifting a 13kg dehumidifier (which is not heavy for able bodies people) then yo should certainly check out the Ebac 3850e dehumidifier.
