During winter months it may be difficult to dry clothes outside. Some households have no option but to bring the washed clothes inside for drying. Typically drying clothes indoors occurs either on a clothes horse or hanging the wet clothes over a warm radiator. While both of these methods seem plausible they could hide several dangers.

Each wash contains around 2 litres of water. When the clothes are dried inside this water is released into your house causing moisture levels to increase by around 30%. This increase in moisture levels causes a perfect breeding ground for mould spores especially those that come from Aspergillus Fumigatus.

Those exposed to Aspergillus Fumigatus could end up with Chronic Pulmonary Aspergillosis which can cause severe, and irrepairable, damage to your lungs and sinuses. In severe circumstances, for the sick and elderly, exposure could be fatal.

The Answer

A good dehumidifier can halt the spread of moisture in your house when drying clothes indoors. However not every dehumidifier is up to the task. There are three very important aspects of a dehumidifier that you should look for when drying clothes inside.

‘Laundry’ and ‘Turbo’ Mode

First of all, the best dehumidifiers feature a ‘Laundry’ or ‘Turbo’ mode. In this setting the dehumidifier works at full power, non-stop until the setting is changed, no matter how low the humidity level reaches. When using such a mode make sure that all the windows and doors are closed and for maximum effect place the wet clothes and dehumidifier in as small a room as possible.

Filter and Ioniser

Mould spores will affect those with allergy symptoms or asthma more than those with a healthy immune system. For allergy and asthma sufferers a dehumidifier featuring an anti-bacterial filter and an ioniser is recommended as excess moisture in the air, such as moisture from drying clothes indoors, causes an ideal breeding ground for mould spores.

An anti-bacterial filter, such as those with nano-silver technology, is ideal for lowering the quantity of bad bacteria in the air. An ioniser attaches negative ions to positive ions, such as dust, and the excess weight causes the enlarged ions to fall down into the dehumidifiers filter, or onto the floor where they can be hoovered up.

The resultant air is far cleaner than air filtered by a standard dust filter giving allergy sufferers respite from dirty air. For this reason dehumidifiers such as the EcoAir DD122MK5 Desiccant Dehumidifier and the Meaco DD8l Desiccant Dehumidifier are excellent purchases to make all year round.

Adjustable Louvre

Both of the above dehumidifiers feature an adjustable Louvre which allows the dehumidifier to direct hot air to where you want it. The hot air can either be pinpointed into a particular spot, for example a clothes horse, or it can be distributed over a wider area.

The key to drying clothes indoors as you have read is to minimize the resultant moisture in the air through the use of a dehumidifier with specific features such as those listed above.
