Extraction Rate 

One of the key things to look for when buying dehumidifiers is the extraction rate. The higher the extraction rate the more condensation you can control.

The portable De’Longhi DEM10 is a highly efficient dehumidifier which can extract 10 litres (18 pints) of water every 24 hours.

The 10 litre extraction rate was measured at a temperature of 32C and a relative humidity level of 80% therefore you could expect an extraction rate of around 3-4 litres per day under UK weather conditions.

Bear in mind that the more efficient the dehumidifier is, the lower the running cost will be.

Humidistat

For optimum efficiency the DeLonghi DEM10 Compact Dehumidifier features a humidistat which is a control that allows you to set moisture to a comfortable level and control energy usage at the same time.

The Dem10 humidistat is located on top of the device (see picture at top of post) for easy access.

You can set the humidistat to a certain setting and when the machine detects that the moisture in the air is below this level it automatically stops working. Once the moisture level rises to above the setting the machine automatically starts up again.

Therefore the DEM10 is never operating 24 hours per day unless you set the setting to continuous which can be achieved by dailing the humidistat to the highest setting .

Delonghi Dem 10 Filter and Tank

The Delonghi DEM10 dehumidifier features a reusable and washable plastic dust filter, which can easily be cleaned by holding it under a running tap for about 5 seconds, and a 2 litre tank with a permanent drain facility.

Importantly the tank is transparent which allows you to see how full it is at any time without having to pull the tank out.

The tank for the reclaimed water measures 4.5l in size and is easy to remove and empty however there is no handle or lid on the tank so a little care is needed when taking the full tank to the sink. The easy solution is to empty the tank before it gets too full.

This tank would need to be emptied twice a day for the removal of 10 Litres of water.

However in normal weather conditions of the UK winter the DEM10 is likely to extract far less than 10 litres of water per day as the temperature and relative humidity levels are often lower than ideal weather for extracting 10 litres of water per day.

Ideal weather conditions for 10 litre daily extraction would be a temperature of 30C and a relative humidity level of 80%.

When the tank is full the DEM10 turns itself of automatically in order to avoid spillage and a full container alert comes on.

The DEM10 features an easy to carry pull-up handle, for easy carrying, and measures 33 wide x 35 deep x 42cm high.

Dem 10 Weight

This dehumidifier weighs 10 Kg whilst its boxed weight is 13Kg. There are no castor wheels on the unit however they are not expensive to purchase.

Due to its small size the DEM10 is ideal for rooms, houses, boats and caravans etc where space is at a premium.

The top mounted control panel features a cover for extra safety. In my opinion the DEM10 could be improved by fitting a digital display on it however the DEM10 came out when dehumidifiers were basic machines without all the bells and whistles that the machines come with today.

Anti-Frost Setting 

A very interesting feature is that the DEM10 comes with an electronic anti-frost setting for use in cold environments.

Best Temperatures For The Delonghi Dem 10

Purchasers should note that no dehumidifier works very well at very low temperatures. The instructions will tell you to heat the room should your compressor dehumidifier get too cold.

The DEM 10 features a warning light if the moisture extracted falls below a certain level. The DEM10 is not recommended for use when the temperature falls below 10°C.

If you are looking to use a dehmumidifier in colder temperatures (ie below 10-12°C) then we recommend the purchase of a desiccant dehumidifier as desiccant units have a constant extraction rate at all temperatures over 2°.

Basic Features But Does The Job

The DeLonghi DEM10 Compact Dehumidifier has no heat setting, auto-restart function or timer. However these features are not expected for a full size dehumidifier in the bottom bracket price range.

Continuous Drainage Facility

Furthermore the DEM10 has an optional permanent drain facility which makes the unit handy for use in isolated areas such as boats, caravans, mobile homes, sheds and garages etc. Note that the DEM10 must be plumbed into a drain or sink in order to use this facility.

The facility is gravity led so the dehumidifier and hose should be placed higher than the drain or sink.

The DEM10 uses ecological gas R134a which is a refrigerant gas that is commonly used in refrigerators and air conditioners.

This dehumidifier collects demineralised water which can then be reused in steam irons for example. Using demineralised water in devices such as steam irons prevents the build up of limescale.

It has been noted that the plug is on the shorter side however this is easily remedied, when it needs to be, with an extension lead.

 Operating Features

The control panel is basic and could be improved by adding a digital display. The only moving part is a rotary dial which turns to ‘on’ when it is moved from its anti-clockwise position.

When the rotary dial is turned to its clockwise setting the DEM10 goes in ‘Continuous’ mode which is like ‘Laundry’ or ‘Turbo’ mode on other dehumidifiers. This setting is ideal for drying clothes etc as the machine keeps working to drive the humidity level down no matter how dry the area gets.

Like other dehumidifiers the DEM10 senses the humidity levels so it can turn itself of when the desired humidity level has been reached.

One negative aspect of the DEM10 is that you can set the humidity levels using the rotary dial however the settings don’t actually say what percentage of humidity the setting is for. If the dial is set at 12 o’clock then the humidity setting is around 60%.

To counter this you can simply buy an inexpensive damp meter which you can then place next to the dehumidifier to get an accurate humidty reading.

One Fan Speed

Another slight negative is that the fan has only one speed. More modern dehumidifiers have two fan speeds so the user can choose between a quiet operation or a poweful one. The DEM10 has tried to balance the two extremes with one fan setting.

Noise 

Reviews of the DEM10 noise level vary somewhat although technically the DEM10 operates at 38dBA at its lowest setting.

Some reviewers say that this dehumidifier is not noisy at all whilst others say it is noisy but not loud.

The consensus view is that the Delonghi DEM10 makes a typical dehumidifier sound which can be compared to the fan sound in the back of a computer or the sound of a running fridge.

I think that the noise sort of sounds like the sound of hair clippers. You know that low buzzing sound. Personally I don’t find it bad at all.

Several reviewers have said that they only have the dehumidifier on during the day time while another reviewer said the low noise helps her sleep.

As is typical for all dehumidifiers you may hear the water dripping into the container. Do not be alarmed if you hear this in case you think that your machine is leaking.

The fan in the DEM10 runs continuously when the machine is on.
