Compressor or Desiccant EcoAir Dehumidifier?

desiccant-dehumidifiers-vs-compressor

As always the first decision you need to make is whether to purchase a compressor or desiccant dehumidifier.

A rough rule of thumb is as follows, if you run the dehumidifier in temperatures of less than 20°C then a desiccant dehumidifier is the right type of dehumidifier for you.

If you want to run the dehumidifier in temperatures above 20°C a compressor dehumidifier is probably best for you.

Practical Example

You live in a semi-detached house and spend most of your time in the living room and kitchen. It is in these rooms in which you have the heating turned on. When running a dehumidifier on the landing upstairs the temperature will be far lower than the downstairs temperature so a desiccant dehumidifier should be used.

Advantages of Desiccant Dehumidifiers Over Compressor Types

    • Quieter
    • Lighter
    • More efficient the lower the temperature falls
    • More efficient than compressor models at below 20°C
    • Can operate at lower temperatures
    • Environmentally friendly (no flouro gases)
    • Generally contains more features (such as ioniser etc)

EcoAir Compressor Dehumidifiers

Use these if the temperature of the room will be greater than 20°C

EcoAir Desiccant Dehumidifiers

The following EcoAir dehumidifiers are desiccant models.

EcoAir Compressor Dehumidifiers

Let’s look at the two compressor models first.

EcoAir Desiccant Dehumidifiers

Since household temperatures are mostly below 20°C in winter, desiccant dehumidifiers make for an excellent choice for controlling humidity.

As shown above their features compare favourably to compressor features and as such desiccant dehumidifiers outsell compressor units by a wide margin. At least, that has been our experience.

So let’s have a look at the main EcoAir desiccant dehumidifiers.

The DD322FW Classic is a neat machine although not quite as popular as the EcoAir DD322FW Simple or the EcoAir DD122MK5. We particularly like the E7 technology which makes this an energy-efficient automated model.

THe DD322FW is definitely one of the better dehumidifiers on the market.

Dehumidifier Terms

Here is a list of terms and their meaning so that you understand exactly what each terms means.

Filter Clean Indication: Many dehumidifiers give an indication when the filter needs to be cleaned or when the filter is incorrectly installed after cleaning. Typically a red light on the control panel turns on, an alarm is sounded and the dehumidifier won’t work until the filter is cleaned or correctly inserted.

This video shows how to remove and insert a filter:

Many EcoAir dehumidifiers feature an anti-bacterial filter which contains Silver Nano technology. Silver Nano filters constantly throw of silver to kill bacteria, viruses and spores etc on the filter as well as in the air immediately surrounding the filter.

Ioiniser: Very basically an ioniser throws negatibe ions into the air. These ions then attach themselves onto positive ions such as dust mites, dirt particles, mould spores and pollen etc.

This creates a very large ion which is too heavy to stay afloat in the air. The ion then falls down into the dehumidifier’s filter or onto the floor where it wil be vacuumed up.

Those with airborne allergies should benefit from a combination of an anti-bacterial filter and ioniser.

Due to a cleaner air an ioniser will also promote greater relaxation, lower stress levels and less anxiety.

Water Tank Full Sensor: It is a mandatory requirement that all dehumidifier turn themselves off when the water tank is full for safety reasons. Typically a red light will turn ‘on’ on the control panel and an alarm will sound. The dehumidifier will resume operations when the water tank has been emptied and reinserted correctly.

Automatic Defrost: What happens with compressor dehumidifiers in low temperatures is that some of the water turns to ice as it’s evaporating. This ice is visible on the coils. When this happens the dehumidifier stops cooling and turns into fan only mode which pushes the warmer room air over the coils helping to defrost them. Once the coils are sufficiently defrosted the dehumidifier will start working in other settings again.

Continuous Drainage Option: A CDO allows the dehumidifier to drain its own water from the water tank. This is a handy feature when you can’t empty the water tank yourself for long periods of time. Think garages, caravans, boats, sheds, greenhouses etc.

There are two types of CDO:

  • Gravity Operated
  • Motor Operated

Gravity operated continuous drainage options should see the dehumidifier placed above the sink or drain into which the water is to be fed. Gravity will pull the water down the hose into the drain.

Motor operated CDO’s can have the dehumidifier placed below the sink or drain as the motor will pull the water up from the water tank and into the drain.

Extraction Rate or Moisture Removal: Dehumidifiers are advertised with a specific extraction rate. The extraction rate is the amount of moisture removed from the air in 24 hours and is measured in litres.

Note that these extraction rates, in particular for compressor models, have been tested in temperatures far different from UK temperatures.

A standard testing climate would be a temperature of 30°C and a relative humidity of 80%.

As mentioned previously compressor dehumidifiers become more efficient the higher the temperature rises.

It would be very rare for a UK home to have a temperature of 30°C (sadly, even in summer!). Typically the relative humidity levels would be far less than 80% in homes around the UK as well.

Therefore your actual extraction rate is likely to be far lower than the stated extraction rate of the dehumidifier.

Laundry Mode: Sets the dehumidifier into full power mode. The dehumidifier will work at full power until relative humidity falls to around 35%. Ideal, as the name implies, for drying laundry inside as well as for use on wet walls and DIY projects where drying time can be shortend.

Led Display: A LED display on the control panel is one of my favourite dehumidifier features.

Unfortunately many dehumidifiers don’t include this feature which is strange as the LED display states the rooms temperature and relative humidity. Without a LED display you need to buy a hygrometer to see what the actual room humidity levels are.

A LED display is a definite plus if you would like to monitor the rooms humidity levels closely.

CFC Free: Due to compressor parts many compressor dehumidifiers can emit chlorofluorocarbon compounds which are not environmentally friendly. If you are an earth lover, as we are here at ByeMould, we would suggest that you purchase a CFC free dehumidifier.

ecoair dehumidifier e7 technology saving energy power consumption

EcoAir Energy Saving E7 Technology

EcoAir’s energy-saving E7 technology was introduced in 2012 as part of the company’s relentless drive for perfection.

The E7 technology controls power, humidity and temperature automatically due to several algorithms operating in parallel. The dehumidifier automatically toggles between its different settings to operate in its most efficient setting for the climate.

The dehumidifier only consumes electricity when it is absolutely necessary allowing the end-user to save quite a bit of money as energy consumption can be lowered by as much as 40%.

When dehumidifiers operate at high power for a long time the air can become too dry which would bring on physical symptoms such as dry and cracked lips. The E7 technology contains an ‘Overdry Protection’ system which allows the dehumidifier to toggle into different modes such as stand-by when the air gets too dry.

EcoAir Dehumidifier Warranty

EcoAir DD322FW 2 year Warranty Review

Domestic EcoAir dehumidifiers come with a 2 year Warranty

All domestic EcoAir dehumidifiers come with a standard 2 year warranty.

For all the dehumidifiers listed above you can also purchase a further 3 years of extended warranty as follows.

  • 1 year extra £45* total warranty = 3 years
  • 2 years extra £60* total warranty = 4 years
  • 3 years extra £75* total warranty = 5 years
  • * prices include VAT at 20%

You can read EcoAir’s Warranty terms here.

After Sales Service

EcoAir provide a high standard of after sales service.

If, by chance, your dehumidifier is faulty then simply follow the instructions on this page and EcoAir will be happy to help you.

Options include both ‘Warranty’ service and ‘Outside of Warranty’ service.

Despite the company offering an ‘outside of warranty’ service Byemould highly  recommends that you purchase extended warranty on any dehumidifier that you may buy.

Dehumidifiers are an appliance after all and despite companies ensuring a very high manufacturing quality a very few products will no doubt be faulty. This is just the nature of appliances and has nothing to do with production standards from high quality companies.

EcoAir DD122FW Simple and Ecoair DD122MK5 Dehumidifier Comparison

Without a shadow of a doubt the biggest two selling dehumidifiers on Amazon are the EcoAir DD122FW Simple Desiccant Dehumidifier and the EcoAir DD122 Classic MK5 Desiccant Dehumidifier .

Below is a quick summary of the differences between the two units. Several of the points below have been described earlier in this guide however we appreciate that readers may scroll down to this section without reading the information above. Hence we will briefly describe the most important points so that readers will have full information at their disposal.

Desiccant Is Best

As mentioned elsewhere on ByeMould we generally prefer desiccant dehumidifiers over compressor dehumidifiers as we feel that desiccant units suit UK climates much better.

Both of the EcoAir dehumidifiers are desiccant models and therefore have certain advantages over compressor models. The advantages of desiccant dehumidifiers over compressor units are not limited too but include being:

  • Quieter
  • Lighter
  • Able to operate at lower temperatures
  • Able to operate at a constant extraction rate
  • Able to extract at or near the stated extraction rate
  • CFC gas free

A practical application of a desiccant dehumidifier might be that on a winter’s evening you have the heating on in the sitting room and kitchen which are downstairs. You have placed your dehumidifier on the landing upstairs where the heating is off and the temperature is cooler than 20°c.

In this case a desiccant dehumidifier is perfect as below a temperature of 20°c a desiccant dehumidifier outperforms a compressor dehumidifier which are suited to higher temperatures.

E7  Energy-Saving Technology

The biggest difference between the two EcoAir DD122 dehumidifiers is that the EcoAir DD122MK5 features E7 energy-saving technology.

The EcoAir DD122 Simple is a manual dehumidifier which means that the operator must change the settings while the DD122MK5 is an automated dehumidifier which toggles into the most appropriate setting automatically.

E7 technology is based on a set of algorhythms which allows the dehumidifier to sense the relative humidity in the air and toggle the unit into the most effective setting with regards to efficiency in both operation and energy usage.

According to EcoAir dehumidifiers with E7 technology consume up to 40% less power than dehumidifiers which do not contain this technology.

Overdry Protection

E7 technology also introduces ‘Overdry Protection’ which prevents the dehumidifier from drying out the air too much if left on a high setting for too long.

Control Panel

Another difference between the two units is the control panel.

The EcoAir DD122FW Simple contains a rotary dial control panel while the EcoAir DD122MK5 features an electronic soft touch control panel.

In our opinion electronic control panels are easier to operate and less likely to break.

Automated Swing Setting

A great feature of both units is that they feature an adjustable louvre which is great for drying laundry and clothes indoors as well as drying walls fast in order to apply another coat of paint as soon as possible.

The difference is that the EcoAir Simple has a manual swing action while the EcoAir MK5 has an auto swing action which allows maximum airflow to all areas.

EcoAir DD122MK5 Timer

Unfortunately the EcoAir DD122FW  Simple lacks a timer.

The EcoAir DD122MK5 does contain a timer with 2,4 and 8 hour setting options.

You will need to turn the timer on manually.

An interesting fact is thatUK dehumidifier company Meaco has just released a dehumidifier with a timing system which can be set in advance and which remembers the timer setting on a daily basis without the operator having to input the settings. Clearly this is a new benchmark in dehumidifier technology.

EcoAir DD122MK5 Ioniser

People suffering from airborne allergies, such as hayfever, should really look for dehumidifiers with anti-bacterial filters and ionisers.

Both EcoAir DD122 dehumidifiers feature anti-bacterial filters which contain silver-nano technology. Basically silver-nano technology kills bacteria upon contact both on the filter and in the air.

The EcoAir DD122MK5 features an ioniser which neutralises dust and gets rid of pollen, spores and bacteria etc which surround the dehumidifier.

Breathing difficulties often occur due to the amount of positive ions in the air. The ioniser introduces negative ions into the air and these ions hook up to positive ions such as dust and pollen. The new ion is too heavy to stay afloat in the air and falls to the ground, or into the dehumidifiers filter, ready to be cleaned up.

With the number of negative and positive ions being more balanced breathing becomes much easier.

What To Look For When Buying A Dehumidifier byemould

Conclusion

In our experience we have found EcoAir to be a trustworthy and high quality company.

However reading reviews on Amazon, and elsewhere, you do come across some negative reviews of the products (as with all products).

To ensure that your dealings with EcoAir dehumidifiers are pleasurable please ensure the following:

  • You select the appropriate type of dehumidifier (compressor or desiccant)
  • You select the appropriate size of dehumidifier for the job (see table here)
  • You take out an extended warranty (you really should, just in case)
  • You clean the filter regularly to keep the dehumidifier in optimum condition and extend its life
  • Place the dehumidifier in an appropriate area
  • Don’t place clothes etc over the dehumidifier
  • You read the instruction manual and follow the guidelines contained inside!

So finally we hope that you have found this guide helpful.

If you did find this guide helpful then you can help us by linking to this review from your blog, on forums or social media.
